In Home Caregiver: Healthy Holiday Eating Tips For Seniors

Dec 15, 2017 by Sherry James

If you are working to be the in home caregiver for your loved one this holiday season, then you may know that the holidays can present a number of problems. It is important that you make sure your loved one eats properly and adheres to his or her diet, but this can seem near impossible, especially when there are treats all over the table and you are swamped with the stress of planning a travel and wrapping gifts in time. It is important that seniors do not deviate from their diet too much and your loved one’s in home caregiver can provide you with some pointers on what can help you and your loved one.

It is difficult for many people to control what they eat during the holidays. Below, you will find some tips from your loved one’s in home caregiver:

  • Never deprive your loved one from sweets and treats as this will only make the situation worse and they may overindulge when the opportunity presents itself
  • Do not leave your loved one unattended with holidays treats, especially if they suffer from dementia or some form of memory loss
  • You should pay close attention to your loved one, especially at parties where sweet treats are left out in the open and available
  • If your loved one receives treats at his or her home, limit how many treats your loved one is able to consume per day
  • If family members are working to help you care for your loved one, do make sure they are alerted to the situation as well and that they are on their toes
  • If your beloved senior is diabetic, make sure they only consume foods that are healthy and good for them
